THE RECORDS – Catholic is 9-3 in 2018, including a 3-1 mark in Region 4-5A. The Irish won at Oak Ridge last week, 42-40. Central is 11-2 this year, including a 6-0 mark in Region 2-5A. The Bobcats won at home over David Crockett, 23-12, last week.
ON THE SIDELINE – Steve Matthews is in his sixth year at the helm of the Irish. He also serves as Catholic’s offensive coordinator. Matthews came to Catholic from Seigel High School in Murfreesboro, where he served as offensive coordinator from 2010-2012. He was head coach at Moore County in 2008 and 2009 and posted a 10-11 record. He also served as QB/WR coach at Tullahoma, his high school alma mater, from 2004-2007. His overall record is 72-29, and his record at Catholic is 62-18. The Irish have reached the TSSAA Playoffs in each of Matthews’ seasons at Catholic. His playoff record is 18-3, and his 2015 (4A) and 2017 (5A) squads won TSSAA state championships. Matthews played collegiately at Tennessee and Memphis. He played professionally with the Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tennessee Oilers.

IN THE PLAYOFFS – Catholic makes its 26th appearance in the TSSAA Playoffs. The Irish have posted a 38-22 record in the TSSAA Playoffs and won the Class 5A state championship in 2017, defeating Beech, 45-28. Catholic also won the Class 5A state championship in 2015, defeating Pearl-Cohn, 48-8, and the AAA state championship in 2008, defeating Memphis Mitchell, 28-18. The Irish also played in the 2003 championship game, losing to BGA, 24-19.

LAST YEAR VS. CENTRAL (TSSAA Playoffs/Semifinal Round) – Playing in the semifinal round for the third time in five years, Catholic went on the road and defeated Central, 42-7. A 28-yard pass from Jack Sompayrac to Dashon Bussell capped a seven-play, 57-yard drive to give the Irish a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter. On Central’s next possession, Jake Mahoney grabbed an errant Bobcat pass and the Irish were in scoring position. A 27-yard Paxton Robertson field goal provided Catholic with a 10-0 advantage after one quarter. The Irish were back in the end zone again early in the second stanza as Joshua Brown rambled 10 yards to paydirt. After forcing a Central punt, Catholic proceeded on a 14-play, 69-yard drive, capped by a 12-yard run from Sompayrac. Central posted its only score of the evening on its ensuing drive, leaving the halftime score 24-7. A 26-yard Robertson field goal on Catholic’s first possession of the second half lifted the Irish to a 27-7 advantage. Following a Central fumble, Sompayrac connected with Adam Jones on a 31-yard touchdown strike to move the margin to 34-7. A seven-yard run from Sompayrac, followed by Brown’s conversion run, upped the advantage to 42-7 early in the fourth quarter and set the rolling clock into play. Brown topped the Irish rushing attack with 67 yards on nine carries. Sompayrac added 58 yards on 13 tries. Sompayrac was 15-of-21 passing for 204 yards. Bussell was the main target, grabbing five balls for 88 yards. DJ Mitchell also had five receptions for 37 yards. Catholic’s defense posted season-best totals in first downs allowed (8) and total offense allowed (172) on the evening. In addition to his interception, Mahoney had 12 tackles and a fumble recovery. Stiles Moore added 11 tackles, including two TFL’s and a sack. Joe Fluker had nine stops for the Irish.

TURNOVER MARGIN – Catholic is minus-two in turnover margin in 2018. The Irish have thrown 13 interceptions and lost six fumbles. Opponents have thrown 11 interceptions and lost six fumbles.
GROUND IT OUT – Keondre Jarmon rushed 24 times for 266 yards and two touchdowns in Catholic’s 30-12 win over Region 4-5A foe Rhea County. The modern-day record for most rushing yards in a game is held by Nolan Coulter with 298. Coulter amassed that total against Heritage in 2011, a 56-34 Irish victory.
GRAB AND GO – Adam Jones had 10 receptions for 251 yards and two touchdowns (50, 55) in Catholic’ 34-28 win over West. The modern-day record for reception yards in a game is held by Chase Kuerschen, who had 255 receiving yards against Fulton in 2016.

WEEK FOURTEEN (TSSAA Playoffs/Quarterfinal round) – Catholic advanced to the semifinal round of the TSSAA Class 5A playoffs with its 42-40 win at Oak Ridge. After Oak Ridge took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter, Catholic embarked on a 15-play, 80-yard drive to tie the score. A nine-yard pass from Jack Jancek to Adam Jones evened the game at 7-7. The Wildcats moved ahead, 14-7, late in the first quarter. A one-yard Jancek run early in the second stanza tied the game at 14-14. Two more Wildcat touchdowns in the quarter had Oak Ridge ahead at halftime, 27-14. The Wildcats found the end zone again early in the third quarter to take a 33-14 lead. The Irish responded with an eight-play, 74-yard drive, capped by a 35-yard Jancek dash, to cut the deficit to 33-21 midway through the quarter. Catholic struck paydirt again with 3:02 remaining the quarter when Jancek passed 15 yards to Cody Duncan to make the score 33-28. The Irish were not finished, as Jones hauled in a 43-yard pass from Jancek to give Catholic the lead, 35-33, at the end of the third quarter. Catholic moved ahead by nine points, 42-33, early in the fourth quarter as Drew Hicks recovered his own fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. Oak Ridge moved to within 42-40 following a score with 2:11 remaining in the contest, but Raaphell Mayes recovered the Wildcat onside kick attempt. Catholic was then able to keep possession until game’s end. Jancek accounted for five Irish touchdowns on the evening. The junior was 11-17-1 passing for 221 yards and three touchdowns, and added 80 yards and two scores on 12 rushing attempts. Keondre Jarmon added 61 yards on 15 carries for the Irish. Jones topped the 100-yard receiving mark for the third consecutive game, grabbing six balls for 110 yards and two scores. Tommy Winton had three receptions for 87 yards. Xavier Story led the Irish defense with 12 tackles, including one for-loss, and a caused fumble. Duncan added 11 stops, while JT Quinones and Stiles Moore each had nine tackles. Quinones had two tackles for-loss and a sack, while Moore had two sacks and a tackles for-loss. Cooper Mays had eight tackles, including two for-loss and a sack, and also broke up a pass. Jones had a fumble recovery for the Irish.
WEEK THIRTEEN (TSSAA Playoffs/Second round) – Catholic advanced to the quarterfinal round of the TSSAA Class 5A playoffs with its 28-25 win at Fulton. Catholic scored on its first possession, marching 59 yards on 10 plays. Jack Jancek passed 13 yards to Stiles Moore to put the Irish ahead, 7-0. Fulton then posted two touchdowns and led after the first quarter, 13-7. A 31-yard pass from Jancek to Adam Jones put the Irish on top for good midway through the second quarter. A one-yard run from Jancek midway through the third quarter capped a 12-play, 72-yard drive and moved the Irish lead to 21-13. Fulton scored late in the quarter to pull within 21-19. A four-yard run from Keondre Jarmon gave the Irish a 28-19 lead with 4:45 remaining in the game. Fulton responded with a touchdown, but Taylor Shannon recovered a Falcon onside kick attempt (cont’d)
and the Irish ran out the clock. Jarmon had 64 yards on 14 carries to pace the Irish rushing attack. Jones had six catches for 101 yards and a touchdown. Cody Duncan had 12 tackles, including one for-loss, and a sack. Jancek and Ray Thompson each had 11 stops, with Jancek also collecting an interception. Xavier Story was also in double-digits with ten tackles. Javis Mynatt grabbed his third interception of the season.
WEEK TWELVE (TSSAA Playoffs/First round) – Catholic posted a 34-28 win at home over West in the first round of the TSAAA Class 5A Playoffs. For the fourth consecutive game the Irish scored on the opening possession of the contest. A 15-yard pass from Jack Jancek to Tommy Winton capped a ten-play, 80-yard drive in the opening 3:29. West scored two touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead, but the Irish tied the contest late in the first quarter when Jancek passed 50 yards to Adam Jones, A 36-yard field goal from Paxton Robertson put the Irish ahead, 17-14, and a 70-yard pass from Jancek to Winton had the Irish ahead, 24-14 midway through the second quarter. Winton has seven receptions for 143 yards for the night. Two more scores from West left it ahead at the half, 28-24. Jancek, who passed for 454 yards and four touchdowns on the evening, connected on a 55-yard strike to Jones to move Catholic ahead to stay, 31-28. Jones had 10 receptions for 251 yards, coming just four yards shy of the single-game record for receiving yards. A 37-yard Robertson field goal with 3:31 remaining in the game provided the final margin. The Irish amassed a season-high 523 yards total offense on the evening. Cody Duncan led the Catholic defense with 19 tackles, including two for-loss. Xavier Story had 13 stops and also caused a fumble.
WEEK ELEVEN – Catholic concluded its regular season with a 6-3 overall record and 3-1 mark in Region 4-5A following its 42-0 win at Lenoir City. The shutout was Catholic’s first since 2016. Jack Jancek, seeing his first action since August 24, led Catholic on a seven-play, 61-yard scoring drive on the first possession of the game. Jancek connected with Tommy Winton on a 32-yard pass to put the Irish ahead, 7-0. A two-yard run from Taylor Shannon four minutes later upped the margin to 14-0. Jancek registered touchdown pass number two early in the second quarter with his eight-yard pass to Keondre Jarmon. Winton was back in the end zone next, hauling in a Caden Buckles pass and racing 63 yards to paydirt. Winton posted touchdown number three when he grabbed Jancek’s third scoring toss, a 46-yarder late in the second quarter to make the score 35-0. A seven-yard pass from Buckles to Adam Margolis put the score at 42-0 midway through the third quarter. Jancek was 8-of-9 passing for 154 yards on the evening. Winton had four grabs for 158 yards. Jarmon led the rushing attack with 31 yards on six carries. Cody Duncan paced the Irish defense with 12 tackles, including two for-loss. He also had a caused fumble and recovered fumble. Xavier Story added eight tackles, including one for-loss, and a sack. JT Quinones collected his fourth interception of the season.
WEEK TEN – Catholic enjoyed an open date.
WEEK NINE – Catholic improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in Region 4-5A with its 49-7 home win over Walker Valley. Keondre Jarmon put the Irish on the board just 1:02 into the game with his three-yard run. A six-yard pass from Caden Buckles to Tommy Winton had the Irish ahead, 14-0 just two minutes later. Stiles Moore made his first reception of the season a memorable one, grabbing a 23-yard scoring pass from Buckles midway through the first quarter. Following a Walker Valley touchdown, Jarmon’s 28-yard run pushed the Irish lead to 28-7. Buckles and Winton then reversed roles, as Winton passed six yards to Buckles to move Catholic ahead, 35-7. A 22-yard Winton run gave the Irish a 42-7 lead, and Nicklaus Iverson closed the scoring with his 20-yard run just before halftime. Buckles was 7-of-8 passing for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Adam Jones was Buckles’ top target, grabbing three balls for 89 yards. Jarmon led the rushing attack with 93 yards on six carries. Winton added 66 yards on three tries. Cody Duncan and Xavier Story led the Catholic defense with nine tackles each. Moore had eight stops, while Sam Beene and Chris Torres had seven tackles each.
WEEK EIGHT – Catholic moved its overall record to 4-3 on the season with its 49-6 non-region win at West Greene. Tommy Winton put the Irish on the board just four plays into the contest with his 38-yard run. Winton was back in the end zone on Catholic’s next possession, taking a Caden Buckles pass 12 yards to paydirt. A four-yard run from Keondre Jarmon had the Irish ahead, 21-0, after one quarter. Winton scored his third touchdown of the evening early in the second quarter as he rambled 72 yards. A second Buckles touchdown pass, a 36-yarder to Xavier Story, upped the margin to 35-0 midway through the second quarter. Buckles provided a one-yard scoring plunge later in the period to give the Irish a 42-0 lead at halftime. Nicklaus Iverson concluded Catholic’s scoring with his 40-yard run midway through the third period. West Greene got on the scoreboard with a one-yard run on the game’s final play. Winton had 169 yards rushing on just four carries to pace the Irish ground attack. Jarmon added 95 yards on seven carries. Connor Cress paced the Irish defense with six tackles. Stiles Moore had three tackles, and all were for losses. Story had three stops, including a TFL and a sack, while Cole Jenkins collected an interception. Catholic held West Greene to just 55 yards in total offense on the evening.
WEEK SEVEN – Catholic evened its overall record at 3-3 and its Region 4-5A mark at 1-1 with its 30-12 win at Rhea County. The Eagles got on the scoreboard first, converting an Irish turnover into a 20-yard touchdown-scoring drive. Rhea County missed the extra point and held a 6-0 lead. The Irish answered, marching 73 yards on six plays. Keondre Jarmon covered the final 48 yards and, with the extra-point from Paxton Robertson, the Irish led, 7-6. Robertson added a 37-yard field goal with 4:43 remaining in the second quarter to give the Irish the lead at halftime, 10-6. Rhea County regained the lead in the third quarter, taking the second-half kickoff and moving 56 yards to the end zone. A two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Eagles ahead, 12-10. Once again the Irish answered, this time with an impressive 15-play, 73-yard drive that consumed 6:06 of the third-quarter clock. Cody Duncan went the final yard, and the Irish were ahead to stay. A 17-yard run from Tommy Winton capped a five-play, 91-yard drive early in the fourth quarter to up the Irish lead to 23-12. Jarmon scored from 10 yards to conclude a six-play, 94-yard drive later in the final quarter to account for the final points of the (cont’d) evening. Jarmon rushed 24 times for 266 yards and two touchdowns on the evening. Winton added 62 yards on eight carries. Xavier Story paced the Irish defense with 15 tackles, including two for-loss and two sacks. Duncan added 11 stops and also recovered a fumble. Sam Sompayrac added ten tackles, including one for-loss. Javis Mynatt had two interceptions for the Irish.
WEEK SIX – Catholic fell to 2-3 overall on the 2018 season with its 40-3 loss at Brentwood Academy. The Eagles led, 7-0, after one quarter, then added a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to up their lead to 20-0. Paxton Robertson put the Irish on the board with his 21-yard field goal just before halftime. That score capped a nine-play, 76-yard drive. Brentwood Academy scored three touchdowns in the second half while keeping the Irish off the scoreboard. Keondre Jarmon paced the Irish rushing attack with 91 yards on 16 carries. Caden Buckles, who became the third Irish quarterback to start a game this season, was 10-of-18 through the air for 95 yards. Tommy Winton had five receptions for 40 yards. Xavier Story, Adam Margolis, and Chris Torres all had seven tackles to lead the Irish defense.
WEEK FIVE – Catholic saw its overall record even at 2-2 and its district mark go to 0-1 with its 17-7 home loss to Soddy-Daisy. The Trojans turned two Irish turnovers into touchdowns in the second quarter and added a field goal later in the quarter to take a 17-0 halftime lead. Catholic got on the board midway through the third stanza as Ray Thompson went in from one yard. That score capped a ten-play, 83-yard drive by the Irish. Drew Gregg was 13-of-23 passing for 168 yards on the evening, with Tommy Winton grabbing eight balls for 116 yards. Keondre Jarmon led the Irish rushing attack with 61 yards on 12 carries. Cooper Mays led Catholic’s defense with 16 tackles, including two for-loss and two sacks. Mays also caused a fumble and broke up a pass. Cody Duncan also had 16 tackles, including one for-loss and a sack. Xavier Story was also in double-digits, registering 11 stops.
WEEK FOUR – Catholic improved to 2-1 on the season with its 35-28 home win over Cleveland. The Irish spotted the Blue Raiders a 14-0 lead but tied the contest on a pair of Drew Gregg second-quarter touchdown passes. Gregg connected with Cody Duncan on a 27-yard strike, then hit Tommy Winton on a 61-yarder to even the score late in the first half. Cleveland took a 21-14 lead into halftime via a late second-quarter score. The Blue Raiders went ahead by 14 again late in the third quarter and held a 28-14 lead after three periods. Gregg’s third touchdown pass of the evening, a 27-yarder to Keondre Jarmon early in the final quarter, brought the Irish to within 21-14. Jarmon struck again less than two minutes later, racing 54 yards to paydirt and knotting the score at 28. A 19-yard run from Winton capped an 11-play, 77-yard drive with 1:32 remaining to provide the winning margin for the Irish. Making his first start, Gregg was 11-of-22 passing for 248 yards and three touchdowns. Winton was the top target, grabbing three balls for 124 yards. Jarmon rushed 12 times for 134 yards to pace the Irish ground attack. Alec Bindner recorded 16 tackles, including four for-loss, to lead the Catholic defense. Xavier Story had 13 tackles, with Duncan adding 11 stops, including two for-loss and a sack. In addition, JT Quinones collected his third interception of the season.
WEEK THREE – Catholic enjoyed an open date.
WEEK TWO – Catholic evened its record at 1-1 with its 35-16 home win over Baylor. Jack Jancek gave Catholic a 7-0 lead with his 17-yard run on the game’s opening possession. A 17-yard interception return from JT Quinones put the Irish ahead, 14-0, just a minute later. A 29-yard Jancek dash had the Irish ahead, 21-0, after the first quarter. A two-yard run from Drew Hicks late in the second quarter provided the Irish a 28-0 halftime lead. A seven-yard pass from Drew Gregg to Adam Jones midway through the third quarter pushed the Irish advantage to 35-0. A third-quarter safety and two fourth-quarter touchdowns provided Baylor’s points on the evening. Ray Thompson paced the Irish rushing attack with 49 yards on seven carries. Jancek added 43 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. Gregg was 8-of-12 passing for 145 yards and a touchdown. Jones was the top target, grabbing eight balls for 97 yards and a score. Quinones led the Catholic defense with 12 tackles, two interceptions, and a caused fumble. Cody Duncan added nine stops, with Xavier Story collecting eight tackles.
WEEK ONE – Catholic opened its 2018 campaign with a 31-10 home loss to Maryville. The Irish scored on their opening possession of the season, marching 80 yards in 10 plays. Tommy Winton went in from nine yards to give the Irish a 7-0 lead just 3:32 into the game. Maryville tied the score with a touchdown of its own on the ensuing drive. Paxton Robertson gave Catholic its last lead of the contest midway through the second quarter with his 25-yard field goal. A Rebel touchdown, followed by a field goal as time expired in the second quarter, left them ahead, 17-10, at halftime. The Rebels scored two second-half touchdowns to account for the final margin.
